Biography: A Late Bloomer
In 2009, Meridith Byrne supported her family by selling medical devices for a major women's health company. She was good at it, and she enjoyed working with different people every day. In her spare time she read, a habit carried forward from childhood. She read the latest Harry Potter in her car between sales-calls and Artemis Fowl in her backyard on weekends. She read Eragon while curled-up in her worn-out blue recliner. She even read books that had titles that weren't a kid's name. (Heck, on occasion she got crazy and read a book geared for adults.) Meridith read and read and read.
"Are you going to bed any time soon, Mer?"
"Yes, soon. Just let me finish this chapter."
After years of selling and reading, Meridith began to feel a scratch at the back of her mind. It was soft at first. In fact, she might have been mistaken. But then the scratch grew stronger and more persistent. It wanted to be heard, and it repeated the same two words - a question. Why not?
Why not take some writing classes? Why not spend every day involved with books? Why not write? Well, there were many reasons why not, of course. Adults have responsibilities, they can't follow silly dreams . . . but that scratching . . . it was very persuasive.
Today Meridith still supports her family (less lavishly but equally as lovingly) by teaching middle-school English. Every day she touches, talks about, and reads books. She also writes. She writes in the school parking lot before the building opens and at her kitchen table after her three gorgeous children go to bed. She writes on occasional golden free-days at the local juice shop while nursing a tropical smoothie. In fact, Meridith has written enough to complete her first novel, Return of the Prince as well as several short stories and poems. She's almost done with a second novel, Beth of Death.
Return of the Prince isn't published yet, but if that scratch has anything to say about it, well, why not?
